The FIFA U-20 Women’s Planet Cup was established in 2002 using a view to providing the platform for players to make their first step to a flourishing international career. In that sense it has been a huge success. As a launchpad for future stars, the tournament - which later this season will see the 2016 event happen in Papua New Guinea - has well and truly proved its credentials

That first edition within Canada, which - along with Thailand 2004 - seemed to be an U-19 event, helped create numerous high-quality avid gamers. Leading the pack was local favourite Christine Sinclair which scooped both major personal awards on the way to helping Canada in the final, and has become an actual global star and the particular world’s second-highest international goalscorer. Also prominent were the likes of France duo Laura Georges along with Camille Abily, USA’s Heather O’Reilly along with Germany’s Anja Mittag. Another player who commenced a fruitful international vacation at Canada 2002 seemed to be Kate Gill, who two years ago became Australia's all-time foremost international scorer - female or male - with 41 aims. Gill made a massively significant contribution over 12 years in the Matildas shirt as a tall striker which has a strong all-round game. She was a permanent national team squad member in a very period during which this Aussies went from outsiders to genuine contenders for the world stage.

And Gill says, her experience in Canada being a raw 17-year-old was not just a revelation, but stoked her ambitions. “You have no overseas exposure at that age in support of know what is inside your back-yard, ” she told“We also qualified through Oceania, which was pretty low key in comparison to going through Asia at this point.

“It was one of those moments where you went ‘wow’, and realised that it absolutely was only the beginning and you could carve out fantastic things. You only know your own personal competition, but seeing the game first-hand around the international stage was a modest amount of an eye-opener. I took in the significance of it all, as did the whole group I do believe. ”

Glittering career
Gill’s career included some lengthy and prosperous stints within Sweden’s high-quality Damallsvenskan, while she twice done top-scorer in Australia’s W-League. Gill was also called AFC Women’s Player on the Year in 2010.

And, Gill says, those players who visit PNG later in 2010 for the 16-team tournament is going to be much richer for the event. “The general experience on the tournament makes you appreciate the scale of the game, ” she said. “Not having really witnessed the international stage previous to, it was a good introduction.

“But it was a lot a reality check, to see how good other world really is, and how much dedication and effort you should put in as a player to compete on the entire world stage. Seeing different styles (of football) also altered your perspective on points. ”

Gill football odyssey offers continued beyond the frequency and she now champions the experience from an altogether distinct perspective. After a stint working in sponsorship for Western Australia’s soccer governing body, Gill last year assumed the career of Player Relations Director with Australia’s Players Association. “I’m passionate about leaving behind the game in a way that when I inserted it, and this gives me another platform to do that, ” she explained.

For Gill, that experience of a northern hemisphere summer 18 years still resonates currently.
